[Setup Unit 8] Mockumentary Script - Version 3
This rendition has all scenes outlined and the dialogue and stage directions have been given more detail. I have also added more notes to the start of the script in which I hope will make the actors feel more comfortable acting and get a better understanding on what they can and can't do. I have also renamed the scenes so that there are no '0.5' scenes anymore, which makes for a simpler read. I have also done some more cosmetic changes such as a new font, putting dialogue in italics and highlighting scene titles in order to make for a smoother read through.
Foundation
These scripted scenes will make up the majority
of the mockumentary, however I may cut in real footage with the scripted segments,
between scenes. I may also have 2 – 3 real interviews with students intercut as
well.
- For every scene, Jack can be wearing a different piece of elaborate clothing.
- Every scene post scene 3 includes a photo of Gemma’s face hidden somewhere.
- Bold italics = interview situation.
- When filming a scene, if a phone starts to ring, the option is there for the person to take the call. This will add realism and make it feel more natural. It can be worked into the scene.
- When people are told to just talk, they may speak about anything. Does not have to be funny, however the option is there.
- It is encouraged that people occasionally look into the camera. Especially during the opening scene.
- All lines are simply an outline. People may say them however they wish if it feels more natural.
- David Bird wears the wig for all of his scenes.
- I will select people who will play the role of the audience. By this I mean they will be reacting to the situations by looking into the camera if it is in their direction. The last page shows some examples of the style I am looking for.
- Anyone caught laughing inappropriately during a scene will be shot on site. No pressure.
Scene 1
"9:00"
Students walk into art foundation from entrance
via AS / A2. Occasional looks at camera from people and comments. E.g. 'Are they filming already?’, 'what’s going
on?’
People walk in as two major groups, David Manns
placed in-between the two, and is shown proceeding into the office in which he
works, setting up his paints as people continue to walk through. People also
put on labcoats as they walk in.
A few handheld shots of people walking to their
desks.
Back to initial shot.
Oscar is the last person to walk in and looks at
camera, says nothing – but looks slightly smug. Continues to walk into the
foundation while camera tracks – showing him walking towards his desk.
Proceeds to speak to class, in a smug manner,
garnering no response:
E.g. "Alright
guys? Mad weekend that was. You don't wanna know. Don't even ask. Yeah... you
should’a been there...." - Continues to ramble for around a minute as
he gets settled down and ready for working – Camera zooms in. Oscar rambles progressively
becomes more awkward as he runs out of words to say, and people appear
frustrated - looking into camera in frustration.
Oscar leaves the room, muttering "I've got some computer work to
do." – Or something to that effect.
As Oscar leaves he stares into the camera.
Oscar: Yeah, I like to think they respect me. In a way, as a role
model I guess. When David’s not around, I think they do see me as somebody to
look up to. And that’s something you can’t teach. It just comes naturally.
Cut, new interview.
Kaleigh: He’s a nob.
Scene 2
"10:00"
Class works in silence, a few shots of close-ups
of people working for around 10 - 15 seconds. Cuts to camera in the same place
as where previous scene ends.
Kaleigh begins looking around her desk, appearing
to look for something. This continues for around 10 seconds, while the camera
pans over to focus on her. People sat around her begin to look over in
confusion, and glance at the camera.
Kayleigh appears frustrated "Where's my pen gone?"
Kayleigh: "My
pen, it’s gone again."
Kayleigh: "I
swear, if it’s those..."
Katie (interrupts): "I’ve got a spare one, use mine." (Light-hearted tone)
Kaleigh: "Thanks."
(Still frustrated)
(5 second pause as they start working again).
David Bird walks into the room: "Class tutorial” Class is alerted,
all look over. "10 minutes. Bring a
notebook and pen."
Begins to turn around to leave the room, before
suddenly looking back round; "Is Tyler
not here yet?"
Class unanimously confirms he isn't. Jumbled
words, class all speaking at once.
Exhales frustrated. "Alright then. If he's not here before the tutorial then one of
you will have to fill him in."
Class agrees.
David begins to walk away.
Lucy: “Oscar’s
not here either, he went off somewhere”
David:
“Yeah I’ve already briefed him.” (Dismissive tone)
David walks out of shot.
Cut.
David’s office:
David Bird sat at computer, with camera placed in
front of him. Begins with him being interviewed.
"I'm
David Bird, an art teacher at King Edward VI College. I've been teaching these
students for around 2 and a half years now..."
Interview continues as sound, over muted footage of the previously discussed
group tutorial.
Interview ends - sound returns to group tutorial.
David Bird: "Alright,
nice work all of you.”
Class in the process of returning to their desks.
People begin talking, and James can be heard saying: “anyone wanna go Sainsbury’s?”
Scene 3
"11:00"
Various shots of people working, close ups and
long shots. Around 3 - 5 shots. Also include shots of people’s slippers.
Shot facing the back door, Sinead in shot. An AS
/ A2 student walks through the shot, opening the door and exits the Foundation
room, and begins to use the heat. Door is left open.
Sinead lifts her headphones off her head slowly
and turns round to face the open door, glaring it for a few seconds. She walks
over and closes it, then sits back down and resumes working.
Katie’s voice can be heard asking: “Are they using the heat gun?”
James replies: “Ooh, better call fire marshal Amelia” – in a sarcastic tone
A few people laugh / giggle.
Suddenly Amelia runs into the shot, muttering “fire marshal Amelia” repeatedly and
wearing her fire Marshall Jacket, running towards the door and leaving the
room, leaving the door open behind her.
Amelia say in a happy voice: “Just making sure you’re using the heat gun safely.” She folds her arms and continues to watch
the student using the heat gun, continuously smiling.
Sinead closes the door again, in the same process
as before, except much angrier.
Scene ends as Sinead sits down again.
Scene 4
“11:30”
Tyler can be heard entering the room.
Camera is in the same location, behind Oscars / Tyler’s
desk. Kayleigh and Lucy are also in shot, but the camera has been turned.
Class is mostly silent, a few mumbles here and
there.
Tyler walks towards his desk, walking around
behind the camera.
Amber: "Oh,
you missed a tutorial, one of us has to fill you in on it."
Camera turn turns to have Tyler in view, as he
sits down at his desk. Amber is in shot behind him.
Tyler shrugs shoulders. Slumps back in his chair
and looks at the ceiling, exhaling.
Tyler looks confused for a second:”Uhh, What the fuck is that.” Pointing
towards ceiling.
Some hand held shots as people looks over in
confusion, and begin giggling as they realise what he is referencing. Camera
whip-pans (cut mid-pan) facing Lucy.
Lucy (laughs): "Oh” Camera whip-pans (cut
mid-pan) facing Lucy. “Its Gemma!"
Nodding in the direction.
Camera whip-pans over (cut mid-pan) to what Tyler previously pointed to, revealing a
black and white photo of Gemma’s face taped to the ceiling above Gemma’s desk.
(Cut)
Tyler looks around class: "Where’s the” *pause*
“real, Gemma...?"
Amber "She's
working in student support, we're gonna see how long it takes her to
notice."
Lucy: "Yeah,
so say nothing about the Gemma heads"
Tyler: "You
mean there’s more than one…"
Lucy: "Oh
yeah, there's more.” Lucy looks directly into the camera. “Loads more."
Pans over to Edwina and Beenish, who look up at
the camera unenthusiastically, and confused. [2]
Edwina is completely lost for words at the situation. After a few
seconds: “I… I don’t even know”
Cuts back to a shot of Tyler sat in his desk. He
is silent for a few seconds and appears to be in deep thought. His face looking
confused, with a frown. Amber can be seen working behind him.
He then suddenly says: “Ain’t turtles extinct?” Looking
around the class for a response.
As he says this, Amber looks over at him, then
into the camera.
Scene 5
“12:00”
Scene begins with an interview of one of the gym
staff, talking about the work they’ve done on the mural. This will be a real
interview.
Audio continues over footage of the foundation
class ‘working’ on the mural. David Manns can be seen at the end carefully
painting the wall with a small brush, while Lucy, Katie and Amber roll around
on the floor laughing. Sinead, Jack, James and Tyler sat cross legged, on their
phones.
Hand-held close-ups of people rolling, people on
phones and David painting.
Scene 6
"12:30"
Close up of David Manns working in Amelia’s
office. Painting or drawing.
Slowly pans out to reveal James and a group of
people arguing around him. Amelia is in shot, but out of focus and in the
foreground, attempting to work.
James: “All
I’m saying is, men have less rights.” – Triggers everybody to start
shouting at him, while David remains working silently.
Scene 7
“13:00”
Shot of people eating at their desks, in the main
room, facing the entrance to AS / A2. Gemma can be seen walking through into
the room
As she walks through, Gemma says urgently above
everybody else: “Don’t go in student support, Oscar’s in there.”
As she comes into view of everybody else, the
room falls into silence and stares at her with anticipation.
Gemma stops in her place. “What is it” – In a confused manner, looking around the room.
Conversations awkwardly resume, and she continues
walking towards her desk with a confused look on her face, walking out of view
of the camera.
5 – 10 second pause as conversations continue.
Gemma shouts: “Oh
my god, what is that!?” Laughing.
Room falls into silence again, as everyone’s
heads dart to look in the direction, looking at the photo Gemma.
Whip pans (cut
mid-pan) to look at Gemma, looking up at the photo, slightly amused.
Camera whip pans (cut mid-pan) back to class, in complete silence. David Manns and
the other people who were in the office in the previous scene peer around the
wall looking confused – in a style akin to that of a cartoon only their heads
in view.
Scene 8
"14:00"
Camera filming a group of people talking around
Jacks desk, still on the subject of feminism, as Oscar interrupts, walking in
through the door to AS/A2. He interrupts their conversation.
Oscar: “Back
in black!” *pause* “The black
clothes.” *pause* “I’m back.” Looking to camera. “I guess they’re not really into the classics.” Awkwardly walks
away, and the camera follows.
He stops outside Amelia’s office, signalling to
the camera to be quiet, as he walks in quietly. Camera shows Amelia eating –
David Manns can be seen in the background asleep - as Oscar makes her jump,
purposely, causing her to start choking on her food.
Oscar is frozen in shock, having no idea what to
do, for about 5 – 10 seconds. He then walks out the room quickly. Camera whip
pans (cut mid-pan) as he runs out,
returning to a shot facing the group of people.
Oscar can be heard saying: “Amber, I think Amelia wants you for something” (slight panic)
Oscar quickly walks back to his desk while the
camera is positioned in the middle of the room, with Oscar’s desk in view, as
well as the entrance to Amelia’s office.
As Amber runs out the room, cuts to a handheld
shot of the middle of the next room.
Amber runs into frame shouting “Amelia’s choking, what do I do!?”
The entire class goes into panic and runs to
Amelia’s office.
(cut)
Returns to a shot outside of Amelia’s office.
(cut)
Back to handheld in other room, slowly zooms into
Oscar pretending to do work while hiding his face in guilt.
(cut)
Returns to a shot outside of Amelia’s office.
As everybody disappears into the office, shouting
and panicking, Oscar can be seen cautiously getting up from his desk and
running out of the room.
Amelia can be heard saying “I think I’m fine … it’s okay” – out of breath – while the rest of
the group of people in the office unanimously display their relief, taking all
at the same time.
5 second pause – silent.
James: “Sainsbury’s
anyone?”
Scene 9
"14:30"
Scene begins with camera filming the class
working from the next room – same as final shot of previous scene - with a
photo of Gemma’s face stuck to the right of the frame.
The class is not completely silent, but is quiet,
with only a few people speaking.
Amelia is seen leaving her office, saying goodbye
to everybody as she exits the shot.
Gemma can then be seen getting out of her desk
casually and walking towards the entrance to AS/A, towards the camera. She
stops as she notices the photo, sighs and rips it off, carrying it away with
her. She is not shown to be angry, instead mildly amused. Glares into the
camera as she walks past. [1]
Handheld montage of people working, 3 – 6 shots. Close-ups
and long shots.
Returns to initial shot, as James walks into
frame, looking into the room of people working.
James: “You
know, none of you ever answered my question”
Various people reply at once, looking over at him:
“What?”
James: “Do
you agree that men have less rights…”
Entire class:
“Oh for fuck sake”
James: “I just don’t understand. They get so worked up over it…”
Scene 10
“15:00”
Close up of Katie’s desk as she works.
Uninterrupted for around 10 seconds. She suddenly looks up towards the back
door and shouts “CAT!” She quickly
runs from her desk towards the door, camera remaining still.
Camera whip pans (cut mid-pan) over to the entire class pressed up against the back
door / windows, banging on the door some saying and some shouting “CAT!”
Or “come here cat!”
This continues for around 10 – 15 seconds.
Sinead partially turns round, looking at the
camera. [1]
Scene 11
"15:30"
Close up shot of James using the sowing machine, talking
about what he’s doing while using it. Cuts to a wider shot of the class, with
James off to the side back towards the camera. There is a 5 second pause before
James gets his hand caught in the sowing machine.
He screams, and falls off his chair, clutching
his hand as he curls into a ball. Nobody reacts.
James: “I’m
okay… I’m okay”
Scene 12
"16:00"
Scene begins with Kaleigh and Katie getting ready
to leave. Camera placed near Oscar’s / Tyler’s desk.
Kaleigh: “You
all ready?”
Katie: “Yep,
let’s go”
Both: “Bye
everyone”
Class replies.
Rest of the class can be seen getting ready to
leave as well – likely won’t be acting, just normal leaving ritual.
Cuts to a shot from other room, facing AS/ A2
entrance – same / similar shot to opening shot. Part way through the shot, the
light in the main working area switches off, leaving only the room with the
camera in being lit. All lights in AS / A2 off as well. People are speaking as
they’re leaving – casual, likely not acting. Some referencing the filming. E.g.
“Are they filming tomorrow too?”
As everybody removes their lab coats Amber asks
Gemma “Have you changed your clothes?” - Gemma looks confused and shrugs her shoulders
as they leave the room – This dialogue will be removed if this scene is filmed
on the same day as the first day, as they will not have changed their clothes.
A few people wave and say bye to the camera.
Everybody leaves the shot and light remains on.
Quiet for a few seconds as people are heard leaving and main art door slamming
shut. Silent for a few seconds.
The door is opened quickly and footsteps can be
heard running back into the art room. Jack runs back into the room, reaches and
turns off the light.
Cuts to black as the light switch is flicked.
End Credits.
