[Resolution Unit 8] Editing Progress Update 3 - Ending Variants
In my last progress update I spoke about and showed the very slight change in direction I had gone with the video. While the base concept was changed, the 'macguffin' (YouTube film analyzer for 'thing that makes the plot happen') was changed from an EMP to a Virus, as well as the editing style being changed for a more data-log style layout. All of these have been retained, and this is will not be changed further, so now it is just a case of finishing the video while adhering to this new style.
Onto the progress update.
I have added around another minute onto the video, filling out the blank period at the end of the last video with video and text, as well as having set up the musical foundations for the final part of the video - which I think will be Foundations favorite part of the film. More on that later.
The section I have added ramps up the intensity, taking advantage of more intense music found in the DOOM soundtrack. I have also been experimenting with chopping different parts of songs together and trying to make it all sound like one song. So far, the song list I have used is:
Dr. Samuel Hayden, Argent Energy, Lazarus Waves, Transistor Fist, Cyberdemon and Mastermind. All of which are from the DOOM soundtrack, which I hope will help to give the illusion that it is one big song. The part of the video that entirely negates this is the silent moment between the opening credits and when the video actually begins, but this is entirely intentional. While the opening credits do slightly work against the world building/data log feel of the film, it helps it to feel more like an official documentary, as well as giving some visual hints and build up to what occurs later in the film.
On the subject of the opening credits - I am planning on replacing some of the imagery to clips that gel more with what is seen in the latter part of the video. This includes some of the war footage, as the combination between WWII and modern day warfare is conflicting. That said, I would like to keep the opening shot of WWII planes, even if it does stand out. It's a striking image that instantly gives a serious yet ironic feel - based on what my class will be expecting.
Onto the final part of the video, which is yet to be edited.
The plan for the ending is to end on a slight twist, for which I had two ideas.
The first idea: This idea reveals that the entire video has been from the point of view of extraterrestrials who have been watching earth since the viral outbreak, stating that the aliens are planning an invasion of Earth once the human race is extinct. It is still left ambiguous as to where the virus originated.
The second idea: The second idea has a lighter tone, and accuses the art foundation class of creating the virus, leading into an intense sequence of footage comprised mostly of footage from within art as well as some short clips from found footage movies (REC, Cloverfield) like the rest of the video.
The second idea is the more humorous of the two, and I can see that getting a good reaction - while the alien invasion one is darker, and could be taken entirely seriously - which I do not want. For a video that has such a dark subject matter combined with the music, I think it needs to end on a sillier tone, which still fits with what came before it.
The song that will be playing during the ending sequence is Mastermind, from the DOOM soundtrack, as I've always seen the song as the music that would play during a title sequence for a film or TV show. Plus it's not too heavy that it would be distracting, however, would still help give the ending some pay-off to the previous parts of the video which was essentially just build-up.
