[Prologue Unit 4] Comic Art - Preparation
Of all of the intros from this year, this is the one I have been most excited to work on. The intro for last years Sci-Fi Weekender (below) was one of my favorites just behind my 'Evolution of Video Games' intro. I think the original comic art intro spoke to me so much is its simplicity, the opening sequence forcing me to make as much as I could using just pictures. Later in the video I also used footage for Dredd, which worked incredibly well, as I used one of the 'Slo-Mo' scenes, in which it was shot in a way that was meant to resemble a comic. There has been no new major Sci-Fi 2000AD material (film wise) since Dredd, so I'd be happy to use that footage again with some slight adjustments.
My 2016 comic art intro was a little cartoon-like, and I'd like to make this new one a little darker - not just in terms of the visuals but also in tone, which will be set by the music. I'd like to better represent 2000AD's rebelliousness and the honestly quite dark nature of their most popular character Dredd. To do this, I've selected three songs which I'm considering using.
BFG Division - Mick Gordon (DOOM)
This is an extremely aggressive song, and is one of the heaviest I know, which is why I like it so much. This suits the character of Dredd, but is also likely to turn some heads, as it's so different to all the other songs I've used - and I'd really like to attract some more people to this. It's also from DOOM, regarded as one of the best first person shooters of 2016 (some - including me - consider it the best of all time) and has a lot of popularity surrounding it, so this may help draw some attention. As well as this, the song feels gritty and aggressive, with is a similar tone to how the Dredd movie portrays Judge Dredd and Mega-City One (where Judge Dredd is mostly set), whereas the comics have more of a Sci-Fi feel to the setting.
Futureland - Sonic Mayhem
This song is very cyberpunk-y / Blade Runner, which already fits in with the theme of the event. Plus it does fit some of the comic depictions we've had of Mega-City One very well, however not the depiction seen in the Dredd movie so much. Plus I think it's a little slow paced, and the intro needs something with more energy to it.
Dissension - Front Line Assembly
I consider this a nice combination between BFG Division and Futureland - sporting the heavy drums of BFG and the synths of Ftureland, however I think the lyrics throw it off a little. I think that will be a bit too distracting, taking away from the text on screen. I think that BFG Division portrays the rebellious nature of 2000AD a lot further than this, with nothing but music.
